Biden Calls Shootings "Horrible" in Meeting with Lantinx Leaders

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — Today, Vice President Joe Biden met with Latinx leaders, including Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda Solis, U.S. Rep. Juan Vargas, California Assemblywoman Lorena González, as well as members of the San Diego & Imperial Counties Labor Council, AFL-CIO, SEIU-USWW, Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA), Alliance San Diego, MANA, and San Ysidro Health Center.

The discussion focused on issues facing the Latinx community and all Americans, including addressing gun violence, expanding access to health care, education, and economic opportunity, and implementing comprehensive immigration reform.

Vice President Biden first addressed the "horrifying shootings" that took place in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio, calling for common-sense steps like universal background checks and bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines to end the gun violence epidemic in this country. He noted that the attack in El Paso was a hate crime fueled by white nationalism and the latest example of assaults on the Latinx and immigrant communities. Vice President Biden also discussed how, as president, he will expand economic opportunities for the Latinx community, such as building on the Affordable Care Act and tripling Title I funding for schools.

Latinx leaders and Vice President Biden had a meaningful dialogue about immigration reform, including the humanitarian crisis at the border, pathways to citizenship, and international relations in the hemisphere. Vice President Biden made clear that America is a nation of immigrants, and that Donald Trump has used immigrants as political scapegoats to manufacture the border crisis.

Vice President Biden reiterated his commitments to ending family separation, legalizing DREAMers, restoring partnerships with Central America to address the root causes pushing people to flee, fixing the asylum system, increasing avenues for legal immigration, and creating a roadmap to citizenship for undocumented people already living in and strengthening American communities. Vice President Biden also discussed improving the efficiency and treatment of commuters that live in Tijuana and work in San Diego.

As Vice President Biden continues laying out his vision for America, he was grateful to meet with Latinx leaders ahead of his appearance at the UnidosUS Annual Conference. Vice President Biden looks forward to engaging the Latinx community throughout his campaign and hearing their ideas, and sharing his plans for restoring the soul of the nation, building an inclusive middle class, and giving everyone a fair shot.
