WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: Joe Biden’s Foreign Policy Address in New York City, New York

Today, Joe Biden laid out his foreign policy vision for America to restore dignified leadership at home and respected leadership on the world stage. Arguing that our policies at home and abroad are deeply connected, Joe Biden announced that, as president, he will advance the security, prosperity, and values of the United States by taking immediate steps to renew our own democracy and alliances, protect our economic future, and once more place America at the head of the table, leading the world to address the most urgent global challenges.

New York Times: “Biden, in Foreign Policy Speech, Castigates Trump and Urges Global Diplomacy”

“In broad but unequivocal terms, Mr. Biden delivered a scathing assessment of Mr. Trump’s leadership, saying his judgment has tarnished the country’s reputation abroad and undermined its ability to achieve its foreign policy goals. As a counterpoint, Mr. Biden set forth his own foreign policy vision that includes putting diplomacy first and working with other countries — rather than unilaterally — toward collective goals.”

CBS: “Biden slams Trump's foreign policy as ‘dangerously incompetent’”

"Joe Biden's presidential campaign is about saving the country -- and the world -- from President Trump, and that message runs through the plans he has to reshape U.S. foreign policy, too. Biden blasted the president as ‘dangerously incompetent and incapable, in my view, of world leadership and leadership at home.’ Biden's globalism is an answer to Mr. Trump's ‘America first’ pronouncements, which the Biden campaign says has resulted in ‘America alone.’”

Associated Press: “Biden promises to end ‘forever wars’ as president”

“Joe Biden promised on Thursday his White House would end ‘forever wars’ and reassert American leadership to combat authoritarianism and global instability, which he says are proliferating under President Donald Trump. The decision to make the speech reflects Biden’s belief that his experience as a longtime senator and former chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee combined with his eight years as vice president distinguish him in the crowded Democratic field. Biden said in the first year of his presidency, he would convene a global summit of democracy, bringing together political and civic leaders, along with those from the private sector.”

CNN: “Biden slams Trump in foreign policy address”

“Joe Biden pledged to undo President Donald Trump's foreign policy moves in a speech in which the former vice president laid out how he would seek to restore pre-Trump international norms and ‘place America back at the head of the table.’ The centerpiece of his effort to return to international cooperation: a summit that Biden said he would call among the world's democracies, non-governmental organizations and corporations -- particularly tech and social media companies -- to seek a common agenda to protect their shared values. Such a summit would push companies like Facebook, Google and Twitter -- where Russian trolls reached American voters during the 2016 election -- to combat challenges such as surveillance, censorship and the spread of hate speech”

Bloomberg: “Biden Outlines Plans to Reset U.S. Foreign Policy After Trump”

“Democratic presidential front-runner Joe Biden said Thursday that he would lead a sweeping overhaul of U.S. foreign policy to reverse many of Donald Trump’s actions. The former vice president said he would focus on restoring America’s central role in mobilizing democracies against global threats by restoring alliances and relationships that have been damaged by the administration. He also emphasized domestic priorities such as recasting immigration policies, reinvigorating U.S. democracy and equipping Americans to better succeed in the global economy.”

Slate: “Biden Is the Only Candidate With a Fully Formed Foreign Policy Vision”

“Whatever else one thinks of Joe Biden, the speech he delivered in New York on Thursday showed him to be the only Democratic candidate with his own vision on foreign policy and a full understanding of just how badly President Donald Trump’s vision is damaging U.S. interests and values around the world. As with other issues, and in keeping with his personal style, Biden presented himself as a paragon of the old-school liberal establishment—the restoration candidate who will revivify our politics with decency, transparency, empathy, national unity, and strengthened ties with our traditional democratic allies.”

HuffPost: “Joe Biden Lays Out Foreign Policy Plan To ‘Repair’ Trump’s Damage”

“Former Vice President Joe Biden used an expansive foreign policy speech on Thursday to assert that President Donald Trump has decimated America’s position in the world, suggesting in response a return to the U.S.’s traditional but increasingly controversial post-war approach to global affairs. Biden positioned himself as the candidate with the international experience necessary to return the U.S. to its previous standing. He committed to reversing Trump-era policies, including the ban on travelers from several predominantly Muslim countries and the separation of families of undocumented immigrants at the U.S. border.”
